Pope John Paul II's opposition to the assisted suicides, living wills and health-care proxies, which he refers to as 'culture of death' is discussed. He issued a 'Declaration on Euthanasia' during his tenure in 1980 that restated Catholic teachings opposing mercy killing while approving the right to refuse extraordinary means for sustaining life.
