Many other phone failures affected air traffic control
Article Abstract:
A total of 114 major telephone failures that disrupted air traffic control had occurred since Aug 1990, according to a report by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released by the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Finance. Fifteen of these failures affected air traffic controllers in the Washington DC area while 10 took place in the greater New York area. The power outages lasted an average of about six hours. FAA has been seeking a nationwide overhaul of its telecommunications network after it identified telephone failures as one of its biggest problems. The agency, however, says that its air traffic control system is designed so that planes can still fly in safely even during telephone failures. Controllers, airline officials and safety experts contend that phone outages diminish the system's safety margins.

MCI gets contract at Citicorp: A.T.&T. the loser on long-distance
Article Abstract:
Citicorp awarded a four-year $250 million contract for its long-distance telephone service to MCI Communications Corp on May 8, 1992. AT&T previously handled most of the long-distance service for Citicorp, although it was not officially Citicorp's primary carrier. AT&T competes with Citicorp as a provider of credit cards, but all three companies state that the competition was not a relevant factor in awarding the telephone service contract. According to Citicorp, the contract was awarded solely on the basis of price and MCI's ability to meet their communications needs. Citicorp hopes that having a primary carrier will enable it to cut phone costs and realize greater efficiency. MCI is also the primary carrier for Merrill Lynch & Co, the nation's largest brokerage.
