Microsoft selling Softimage to Boston's Avid

Redmond, WA-based Microsoft Corp. is selling SoftImage Inc. of Montreal, Canada, after four years of its acquisition of the special-effects software maker for $130 million in 1994. Microsoft described the sale as its first large asset divestiture. SoftImage meanwhile, revealed that it is being bought by Boston, MA-based Avid Technology Inc. for $285 million in cash and stock. Avid CEO and Chairman Bill Miller believes acquiring SoftImage furnishes his firm with weapons to better compete in the C$2.5-billion television production finishing market.

Open text rides internet-mania

The shares of software developer Open Text Corp of Waterloo, Ontario, have been attracting institutional investors, resulting in the runup from C$26 to C$60. The interest has been attributed to the company's stake in MiningCo.com Inc, a Web site that offers reviews of other sites and has features articles and chat areas. Open Text also announced a new product called MyLivelink, which enables users of its flagship Livelink software to easily access internal and external data and information from their computers. ;
