Article Abstract:
A revolution that united the left-wing students, conservative bazaar merchants and clerics overthrew Iran's pro-US shah regime in 1979 and the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini became the revolution's leader. The civil war in Lebanon, in the meanwhile, was increasing along the with the strength of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and it continued even though Israel withdrew in 1985 to a buffer zone in southern Lebanon.

The historic Oslo Agreement between Israel and the Palestinians in 1993 had briefly offered hope for permanent peace in the Middle East. Us President Clinton's officials however noted that Khatami had not ended support for terrorism and the development of weapons of mass destruction.
