World oil prices increased sharply along with gasoline prices when Arab members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) embargoed oil exports to the US in retaliation for its support of Israel in the Yom Kippur War. In response, lawmakers created the Energy Research and Development Administration, to ensure adequate energy supplies and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, a 700-million-barrel federal stockpile to reduce future disruptions of oil imports.

Energy costs are expected to increase by as much as 50 percent this winter. Although there are several things that can be done around the house to conserve energy, buying a new furnace may be the best investment.
