Mpact Immedia buys Newstar's E-finance division

Mpact Immedia Inc., a Montreal, Quebec-based subsidiary of Bell Canada, has acquired Thornhill, Ontario-based Newstar Technologies Inc.'s E-finance division for C$50 million in cash and stock. Mpact's move is aimed at becoming the leading provider of electronic commerce in Canada's banking industry. The terms of the deal includes performance bonuses payable before Oct. 1, 2000, to E-finance division's 135 employees. Mpact's attraction to Newstar is on the latter's electronic billing technology, which reduces customers' cost of using a bank machine from as much as C$2.50 per transaction to a fraction of that. E-finance division reported a revenue of C$23.5 million in earnings of C$1.8 million during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1998.

Newbridge buys U.K. firm

Newbridge Networks Corp., a Kanata, Ontario-based company, is expected to confirm its acquisition of Ubiquity Software Corp., a Newport, UK-based company that specializes in creating software for call centers. Terms of the acquisition deal were not disclosed though the transaction signals a change to Newbridge Networks' roster of affiliates, which include Castleton System s Corp. and PixStream Inc. of Waterloo, Ontario. The acquisition also gives Newbridge Networks more presence in the growing call center market.
