NCR revamping A.T.&T. computer unit
Article Abstract:
NCR agreed, in May 1991, to be acquired by AT&T in a deal valued at $7.48 billion, and now, one month later, NCR has begun to dismantle AT&T's computer operations. On Thursday, Jun 13, NCR Pres Gilbert T. Williamson told AT&T's salespeople force that the combined computer business will be based on NCR models introduced in fall 1990. According to Williamson, no decision is yet made concerning how many jobs will be cut. AT&T, which has lost billions of dollars in the computer business, is expected to leave future strategies that relate to computers to NCR's executives. Some AT&T products, including the Safari laptop computer and some networking equipment, will probably emerge as significant in the combined operation.

Big U.S. contract to A.T.&T.: computer business for Treasury worth at least $1.4 billion
Article Abstract:
AT&T is awarded a contract for computers from the US Treasury Department. The contract, which is for 3,200 minicomputers and 50,000 workstations, will be worth at least $1.4 billion between 1991 and 1998. The computers are for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which plans to install them in IRS offices nationwide. The IRS indicates that its current computer system uses obsolete technology that dates back to the 1960s. Other companies that bid for the contract included IBM and Lockheed Corp. The minicomputers are to be supplied by AT&T's subcontractor, Pyramid Technology Corp, Mountain View, CA.
