Nail-biting finish
Article Abstract:
The National Party of Australia is threatened with the loss of its leader, Tim Fischer, and the heir apparent, John Anderson, who is also Minister for Primary Industries in the national government. The One-Nation party may be successful in taking their seats. Fischer argues that his constituency has greatly benefited from his time in office but blames the after-effects of long-lasting drought, high interest rates and recession for problems. It is too late for the Nationals to win back the support they traditionally have held.

Voters' microcosm
Article Abstract:
Jackie Kelly and Cathy O'Toole are contending in 1998 for a parliamentary set from Lindsay in western Sydney, Australia. Polls give Kelly, a Liberal candidate, the advantage over Labor's O'Toole, who has organized community-based childcare centers. The incumbent Kelly feels hardcore feminism is counterproductive, preferring freedom for women to choose between careers and family responsibilities.

Federal politics: a double dissolution now spells political suicide
Article Abstract:
Queensland Member of Parliament Bob Katter fears a double dissolution in the climate of political unrest in 1998 would be political suicide. Some analysts believe a temporary solution is to continue threatening double dissolution to convince the Senate to accept Australian Prime Minister John Howard's 10-point Wik plan.
