Yahoo reports that earnings beat estimates by a penny

Yahoo earned $65.5 million with revenue at $270.1 million for the quarter ending June 30. The company beat analysts projections of 10 cents a share with a whopping 11 cents. Yahoo did acknowledge that consolidation in the industry was affecting business, especially some ad revenue coming from "financially questionable" sources. Meanwhile, Yahoo's strong revenue numbers have given some solace to others in a volatile industry.

Napster will begin charging users to exchange music files online this summer. It has proposed giving $1 billion to record companies over the next five years. The announcement comes a week after an appeals court affirmed a lower court ruling that the firm's online music trading service aids and abets copyright infringement.

Yahoo, one of the few Internet 'blue chips', is finally feeling the dwonturn of the "dot-com" economy. Analysts forecast that the Internet concern's 2001 earnings will be down from the previous year's results of $1.1 billion and with no profits to be seen. Also, Yahoo's CEO, Timothy A. Koogle, will be giving up his position as president of the company, but will remain a board member.
