New ISP providers offset consolidation
Article Abstract:
The emergence of niche Internet service providers (ISP) in Canada counters the anti-competitive effects of consolidation in the industry. Paul Pierlot, an economist and project manager at Statistics Canada, said that outside data places the number of ISPs at around 440 but Statistics Canada's own study found that over 675 ISPs operate across Canada. Pierlot said that the Internet industry is certainly dynamic and much merger activity is anticipated. He, however, said that the data indicate that mergers are being offset. Keith Parsonage, director-general of Industry Canada's information technology branch, said that large scale industry consolidation is yet to occur and instead, the industry is expanding with respect to both size and number of players.
