New literature to match DOS 5.0
Article Abstract:
The introduction of Microsoft's MS-DOS 5.0 operating system results in the appearance of various publications to help users work with it. The '10 Minute Guide to MS-DOS 5,' by Jack Nimersheim, Sams, $9.95, is for a user who wants to know what is needed and not much more. The 'DOS 5 User's Guide,' by Dan Gookin, M&T Books, $24.95, includes much more. The 'First Book of MS-DOS 5,' also by Nimersheim, Sams, $16.95, falls between the two previously mentioned books in its amount of detail. More complete than the 'First Book...' is 'DOS 5 Made Easy,' by Herbert Schmidt, Osborne McGraw-Hill, $19.95. 'Running MS DOS,' by Van Wolverton, Microsoft Press, $24.95, which is designed to help anyone using DOS Version 2.0 or later, may be considered indispensable,' though Van Wolverton's explanations concerning variations of DOS versions are sometimes less than clear. 'ick Reference,' by Timothy S Stanley, Que, $9.95, is a handy, concise reference book. 'The Personal Tutor for DOS 5,' Sybex, $69.95, comes as a package with a 90-minute videotape and a book - 'The ABC's of DOS 5,' by Alan R Miller. For the person who wants to know everything, 'DOS Power Tools,' by Paul Somerson, Bantam Computer Books, $49.95, is revised and covers DOS 5.0.

Software designed to help your Scarlett prose
Article Abstract:
Scandinavian PC Systems Inc's Corporate Voice spelling and grammar checking word processing software finds the style of the sequel to 'Gone With the Wind' is very close to the original. Alexandra Ripley's 'Scarlett' and books by other best-selling novelists were analyzed by the style management aid, and the readability and cadence of all were also very close. Although the $249.95 program does not judge literary quality, it finds that a certain rhythm apparently sells in the mass market. The Margaret Mitchell original is written at a fifth-grade reading level, while the Ripley book is at a fourth-grade level. In other software, Quarterdeck Office Systems' $99.95 QEMM-386 6.0 operating system enhancement has an almost automatic memory manager that freed 40-Kbytes of memory in a 640K machine loaded with MS-DOS 5.0, Microsoft Windows 3.0 and other programs that use a lot of memory.
