New services raise Internet stakes
Article Abstract:
The growing number of Internet providers that offer new services to Web users are expected to cause the demise of other players. The Gartner Group, a research firm, estimates the number of Internet providers to fall from 4,500 in 1998 to about 500 by 2002. Among the new services being offered by some Internet service providers (ISPs) are voice mail, video conferencing and Internet phone calling. Recently, Sun Microsystems and Lucent Technologies announced a single box system that enables users to get both their voice mail and e-mail from one box on the Web or an ordinary phone. Susan Almeida, president of the Almeida Group, says small, local ISPs and large national ones are likely to survive in years to come.
