New teller machines that listen: AT&T to test voice identification system
Article Abstract:
NCR Corp develops voice-recognition technology that controls access to bank accounts through automatic teller machines (ATM). NCR is working with AT and T, its parent company, to advance current technology to make the application of voice recognition practical. In the past, voice-recognition technology had required a long initialization process that required users to slowly repeat a long list of words. Additionally, normal variations in voice patterns would prevent the technology from recognizing the user. With the NCR and AT and T development, users will only have to repeat words eight times. Additionally, users will be able to store complete random phrases that will increase security. Company officials expect to implement the technology by 1994 in existing ATMs. Smart cards containing computer chips will be used in conjunction with the voice-recognition technology to replace cards with magnetic strips.

News report hurts stock of Hewlett
Article Abstract:
HP's stock dropped sharply on Jun 16, 1993, on what the company regarded as a misinterpretation of a briefing it gave in Frankfurt. The presentation given to investors discussed slowing growth in orders, but a news report on the meeting gave the impression that revenue and profit growth would slow as well. As the news became known, the company's stock, long a Wall Street favorite, dropped $6.25 to $80.75. At this point HP took the unusual step of releasing the 3rd qtr 1993 sold orders figures before the end of the quarter, showing the orders up 19 percent over 3rd qtr 1992. This restored some confidence, and HP stock finished the day down $3.375 to $83.625. The order growth was down from the 26 percent of the first half of 1993, but that figure is regarded as unusual.
