Newbridge coffers prepared for acquisitions
Article Abstract:
Newbridge Networks Corp has built up a C$880 million fund with which it will use for acquisitions to enhance its position in the emerging Internet and broadband services markets. Newbridge announced that it is about to complete its acquisition of Stanford Telecommunications Inc and that it has won contracts worth over $400 million. Its CEO, Alan Lutz, said the delivery problems which prevented them from completing C$115 million in sales have been solved.

Stalled unemployment rate prompts talk of an interest rate cut
Article Abstract:
Canada's unemployment remained at 7.8% in Mar 1999. Job losses totalled 29,200 but were concentrated mainly in part-time, private sector jobs and among 15- to 24-yr olds. Full-time employment increased by 14,000 jobs in Mar 1999, and is up by 3.4% or 393,000 jobs from Mar 1998. The Bank of Canada is expected to cut interest rates at least two more times in 1998 to boost the employment rate.
