Nortel buys U.S. Internet tech firm

Northern Telecom Ltd of Brampton, Ontario, has acquired Shasta Networks Inc of Sunnyvale, CA, for $318 million in stock and $22 million in cash. Shasta develops and markets equipment that allows Internet service providers and businesses to connect their networks to the World Wide Web. The acquisition would allow Northern Telecom to boost its market share in the Internet protocol business.
