North Dakota backs down on curbing farm imports
Article Abstract:
A proposed law that would curb imports of Canadian wheat and cattle in the North Dakota legislature has been vetoed by Governor Ed Schafer. The proponents failed to muster enough votes to override the veto. The proposed law would require imported wheat and livestock to have disclaimers certifying that these were free of pesticides that are banned in the US. Canada argued that the cerfication process was illegal under NAFTA because it would not apply to other out-of-state shipments.
