Not ready for Windows or OS/2? Here are training wheels; Norton Desktop for DOS is both a friendly interface and proof of a lucrative market
Article Abstract:
Symantec Corp's $179 Norton Desktop for DOS file management software package is a viable alternative for low-end microcomputer users that desire the benefits of a graphical user interface (GUI) without investing in the hardware necessary to effectively run Microsoft Corp's Microsoft Windows GUI or IBM's OS/2 operating system. Norton Desktop is compatible with Intel 8088-based microcomputers, as well as later models, requires 512Kbytes of memory and as little as 4Mbytes of hard disk space. For optimum performance a mouse should be used. The software package provides windows, pull-down menus, icons, scroll bars and other graphical features. Additionally it comes with utilities for virus detection and protection, file backup, disk repair, file viewing and searching and data recovery. Disadvantages to using Norton Desktop include a lack of support for microcomputers without a hard disk drive.

The Norton Desktop: a better window
Article Abstract:
Norton Desktop for Windows, utility software from Symantec Corp, makes Microsoft's Windows program easier to use. For example, Norton Desktop brings Windows's File Manager, Task Manager and Program Manager together, presenting file management as one easy-to-use system. Norton Desktop adds various Norton tools including a backup program and a disk analyzer. File and program management are much improved in Norton Desktop, and applications are easier to work with. According to Jeffrey Tarter, editor and publisher of SoftLetter, Windows 3.0 does not have the navigation tools and utilities that it needs, and Norton Desktop provides them.
