High hopes at Microsoft for product
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp is set to release the newest version of its MS-DOS operating system for IBM and compatible microcomputers. DOS 5.0 is reported to provide better memory management than previous versions, to work better with the company's hugely successful Microsoft Windows 3.0 graphical user interface, and to provide older machines with faster operation when running programs that require extensive memory. The current installed base of DOS machines has reached 60 million. Microsoft feels that the upgrade potential is large enough for it to change distribution strategy by offering the new software direct through retailers instead of simply through computer manufacturers. Some analysts discount the company's optimism, claiming that the expense of repackaging the product for direct sale will cut into potential profits.

New software for Apple links with I.B.M. units
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer Inc develops network software that will allow its Apple Macintosh microcomputers to communicate with IBM-compatible computers on computer networks. Industry analysts say that Apple hopes to penetrate the corporate computing market with its new strategy; businesses have been hesitant about using Apple microcomputers in the past because of their lack of connectivity with IBM-compatible computers. The Apple Macintosh has been successful as a personal microcomputer but Apple officials want to change that image. Analysts note that connectivity software is only part of the solution to changing Apple's image; a strong sales staff and third-party support are also important.
