OSHA switch unlikely to affect telecommuters

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) reversal of a regulation putting the responsibility of home office safety on the hands of employers is unlikely to have an impact on telecommuters. The agency made it clear that government policies on workplace safety do not apply to home offices. Major employers with safety programs for telecommuters have no plan of dropping the programs despite the policy reversal by OSHA.

Proposed OSHA rules trigger controversy
Article Abstract:
The rules being drafted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have generated more than its share of controversy. The proposed regulations, set to take effect in 2001, would require 1.6 million companies to offer education programs on how to avoid work-related injuries. The OSHA say the rules would help reduce the 300,000 injuries occuring in workplaces annually while allowing companies to save on workers' compensation and medical costs. Businessmen have attacked the rules saying they are not based on science and are so costly that they would be forced to close.

Labor ruling lets temps join union
Article Abstract:
Temporary employees at companies nationwide may soon be allowed to bargain for higher wages and benefits in the wake of a decision released by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on Aug 30, 2000. This NLRB ruling holds that temporary workers may join or form unions if they do the same work and are employed beside full-time workers at the company where they are assigned, and if the company to which they are assigned also supervises them. The decision mostly affects long-term temporary workers.
