Two authors argue the pros and cons of allowing convicted serial murderer Clifford Olson to have an early-release hearing. The first author says the hearing will hurt the victims' families and the law should be revised. The second author contends that the rule of law applies to all, even notorious criminals.

Why a 'faint-hope' clause?
Article Abstract:
The 'faint hope' clause of the Criminal Code was passed in 1976 to give convicted murderers a chance for early release. Former Solicitor General Warren Allmand convinced Justice Minister Ron Basford that prisoners with some hope of release would be more compliant. The case of Clifford Olson is discussed.

A killer's plea: Clifford Olson will go before a jury and ask to go free
Article Abstract:
Olson confessed in 1982 to the murders of 11 children, and he was sentenced to life in prison. He is not eligible for parole until 2006, but Canada's controversial 'faint hope' clause gives him the right to a early-release hearing. Families of his victims are outraged over the hearing.
