Nortel knows first hand how high taxes affect productivity
Article Abstract:
Statistics Canada's report showed that the total productivity in Canada grew by a mere 0.6 annually between 1986 and 1996, compared with 1.4% in the US. The reports attributed the disparity to the huge gap in productivity in the electrical and electronic products industries in the two countries. In addition, the manufacturing sector is dominated by high-technology industries. Canada's poor productivity resulted in its failure to attract foreign direct investments, dropping from 8.9% to 4% since 1985.
