Oracle hits profit goal, but sales are far off estimates

Oracle Corp.'s sales for its second quarter fell 11% from last year and earnings at $549 million, down from $623 million this time last year. CEO claims that the economy and the terrorist attacks hurt Oracle, not the competition from Microsoft and IBM. The companys revenue fell from $2.36 billion from $2.66 billion, while analysts had predicted $2.5 billion. Software licenses dropped to $803 million and data-base market fell $1.11 billion from $1.25 billion.

Intel plans broad measures to cut costs

In response to uncertain global economic conditions, Intel Corp. announced cost saving measures including postponement of employees' salary increases, cuts in discretionary spending and a delay in the plan to provide every employee with a free personal computer and Internet access. Intel hopes thereby to save hundreds of millions of dollars without having to reduce spending on research and development.

Hewlett heir in new action against merger

Walter B. Hewlett, the son of William Hewlett, has filed a proxy suit against the proposed acquisition of Compaq Computer Corp. made my the Hewlett-Packard Corp. He believes that themerger is over-priced, risky and it would distract from the already existing problems that Hewlett-Packard must face.
