Ottawa ignores advice, plans plutonium fuel test
Article Abstract:
Ottawa's agreement-in-principle at the 1996 Moscow Nuclear Safety Summit sets plans to burn surplus Russian and American plutonium known as Mox fuel. Tests aim to use plutonium to generate electricity in Canadian reactors on the Bruce Peninsula. However, the Commons Committee on foreign affairs sees that the proposal poses environmental risks. Plutonium decays slowly and can remain radioactive for thousands of years. Some quarters have expressed concern over possible consequences of stolen plutonium in the hands of terrorists.
