Zimmerman wants an explanation why he and five other Southam Inc board of directors members are being ousted as of Jul 22, 1996. Conrad Black, who recently purchased a controlling interest in Southam, is behind the ousters. Zimmerman, 69, belongs to a different era, when business was more genteel.

Conrad Black and the benefit of doubt
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable media attention paid to Black increasing's stake (41%) in Southam Inc and how that will influence quality and competition. He has threatened to lay off some workers, which would probably be counter-productive, but consolidation may have some positive effects also.

The Canadian Press may not survive if Southam Inc, Canada's largest newspaper chain, pulls out of the national news-gathering agency to save $7.2 million a year in membership fees. Montreal press baron Conrad Black, who controls Southam, claims he only wants CP to reform.
