Hanks was born in California to Janet Turner, a hospital worker, and Amos Hanks, a cook. When he was five his father packed him and his three siblings and moved to Reno to start a new life. He describes those years as confusing because they moved around. He received his first movie role in the TV sitcom 'Bosom Buddies
