PolyGram selloff may spin conflict
Article Abstract:
Seagram Co. Ltd's $10.6 billion bid to purchase Dutch entertainment giant PolyGram NV may cause disagreements. Seagram and PolyGram officials stated that they are planning to sell the film division of PolyGram for as much as $1billion to help cover the acquisition cost. But the European Union (EU) stated that it wants the film division of PolyGram to remain European. The EU has been consulting with Canada under the World Trade Organization auspices in an effort to change the way Canada regulates foreign film distribution and added that the conflict arises from PolyGram Film Entertainment's restricted operations in the region.
