Popular allergy drugs eyed for over-the-counter sales
Article Abstract:
The proposal to classify anti-allergy drugs Claritin, Allegra and Zyrtec, as over-the-counter medications has the pharmaceutical industry clashing with health insurers. The latter group want to see the drugs sold over the counter, claiming such a move will reduce their prices. On the other hand, pharmaceutical companies say health insurers are just trying to pass up costs to patients. They argue that insurers would stop covering these drugs, once they are sold without prescriptions.

Eli Lilly loses fight for Prozac
Article Abstract:
Share prices of Eli Lilly fell sharply after an appeals court ruled that Barr Laboratories can sell a lower-priced version of Prozac. The company lost almost $37 billion in market value as its shares fell by 30% from $76 to $32.56. The ruling also means that Eli Lilly will not be inclined to introduce a better version of its original antidepressant drug and that consumers may be able to buy Barr's generic version at prices 25% to 35% lower than brand-name Prozac.

Drugmakers, stores move on FDA ban
Article Abstract:
Pharmaceutical companies are planning to halt production and shipping of products that contain the phenylpropanolamine (PPA) in the face of an FDA ruling on the ingredient. PPA, which is a key ingredient in cold remedies and diet drugs, is found to cause hemorrhagic stroke, particularly in young women. The move to halt production is expected to have little effect in most of the large drug companies since the remedies are only a small percentage of total sales.
