Radio One's mom-and-son team deliver urban appeal

Radio One Inc, US biggest radio company catering to urban and African American audiences, on Oct 2, 2000 acquired KJOI-AM of Dallas, TX, from Infinity Broadcasting Corp for $16 million. The acquisition was the 21st radio station purchased by Radio One in 18 months. Last August, Radio One made the largest purchase ever by an American African-owned company when it bought Clear Channel Communications Inc's 12 stations for $1.3 billon. Radio One now owns or operates 51 stations in 14 of the country's 20 largest African American markets.

Dutch firm VNU to buy ACNielsen in $2.3B deal

Verinigde Nederlandse Uitgeversbedrijven B.V. (NVU) of the Netherlands is buying ACNielsen for $2.3 billion. The deal would make NVU the world's biggest provider of market research services to advertisers and retailers. It will pay $36.75 in cash for every share of ACNielsen, which gathers data on consumer spending and box office sales. The acquisition will reunite ACNielsen with Nielsen Media Research, the US' No 1 TV-rating service, which VNU bought in 1999.

NBC looks for viewers by taking stake in Paxson

National Broadcasting Company Inc (NBC) is set to purchase a 32% interest in Paxson Communications Corp, the biggest TV station in the US, for $415 million. The acquisition is in line with NBC's effort to capture more viewers and increase its ad revenue, while Paxton hopes to use the generated money to fund its acquisitions and to digitize its TV systems. The deal could also see Paxton broadcasting replays and original programming from NBC.
