Rethinking school integration: is the era of court-ordered desegregation over?
Article Abstract:
School integration efforts are undergoing reevaluation, including court-ordered desegregation. Critics of court activity note that court-ordered busing causes community disruption and leads to emigration of middle classes and whites from neighborhoods. School districts must adopt integration plans to satisfy the courts, and some districts are dropping their plans upon termination of the court mandates. The proportion of blacks in black-majority schools is on the rise, and similarly for Latinos. This highlights that integration and desegregation problems have not been solved.
