The huge financial burden and political cost of water reform in Australia have cast new light on the urgency of the fight between state and federal politicians to seize control of the agenda. The fallout involved in repairing the Murray-Darling river basin is billions of dollars in cost, while ruined farmers and devastation in towns calling for structural adjustments will take the long-term cost to the multiple of that sum.
