The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R) competed in an ideologically driven, nuclear-armed Cold War with the United States. The new community government consolidated control after a three-year civil war from 1918-1921 against domestic opponents including old-line tsarists and non-Russian nationalists, supported militarily by the United States, Britain, France and Germany.

Russia's one time billionaire oil tycoon, Mikhail Khodorkovsky is in long prison term and the Russian government is continuing its crackdown on any independent power centers. Non-government organizations (NGOs), both domestic and foreign, some of which are being charged with fomenting discord or spying for foreign governments are also targeted.
