Sales and profits double at Compaq
Article Abstract:
Compaq reports that its net income and sales for the 1st qtr 1993 more than doubled while costs went down to 13.4 percent. Sales per employee, an index of productivity, is placed at $169,625, compared with $78,304 for the same period in 1992. The figures indicate that Compaq's manufacturing system is the most efficient in the computer industry, according to Eckhard Pfeiffer, its president and CEO. Compaq is operating with 500 less employees than a year ago. Because of the continuing price cuts, the company's gross profit margins fell to 23 percent of sales, from 33 percent in the 1st qtr 1992. Compaq has set up a toll-free telephone sales unit and has signed up new suppliers. Users have to wait a month to get their orders of Compaq's new machines.

Compaq's sales for the period increased by 19.4 percent, to $862.2 million, compared with a 58.1 percent increase, to $722.1 million, for the same period a year ago. Compaq sales dip alarms investors
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp will probably not post higher earnings for 4th qtr 1989 than it did in 1988 for the first time since the company was founded in 1982. An announcement by CEO Rod Canion that Compaq would not meet expectations of $91.9 million precipitated a 17-point dip in the company's stock. Analysts predict that the setback is temporary and will be rectified upon the introduction of Compaq's new products, which will include a lightweight laptop computer. Interest in the new laptop has halted sales of the company's older laptop model. Compaq will also introduce a series of desktop models based on Intel Corp's 486 microprocessor.
