Scientists are optimistic
Article Abstract:
Scientists and medical researchers involved in the study of Alzheimer's disease foresee a breakthrough in the search for a cure and better treatment methods before the end of the 20th century. Likewise predicted is increased government involvement through appropriate and adequate funding since the disease will become a political problem as more people get afflicted. Thus, there is hope despite the present absence of any effective cure and the relative inertia governing government's efforts in the direction of long-term health care.

Research continues
Article Abstract:
Research into the causes and possible cure for Alzheimer's disease has continued to accumulate since the release of the results of an East Boston, MA, study that indicated the high incidence of the disease among the elderly in the US. Between 1990 and 1992, researchers have been able to identify 16 stages through which patients pass, a range that encompasses the initial stage of normal behavior to the ultimate level which is severe dementia.

Reaction to invalidation of mice experiments
Article Abstract:
Medical researchers used to have a hard time investigating the causes of Alzheimer's disease because of the absence of suitable laboratory animals, preferably mice, for experimentation. Recently, however, certain genetically developed mice strains that carried human genes were introduced to scientists for their diagnostic use. Unfortunately, studies using the mice models did not produce the desired results. Thus, the search goes on.
