Sears nabs up to 6 downtown Eaton's stores for $30-million

Sears Canada Inc will acquire six of T Eaton's most important downtown stores for $30 million while keeping the Eaton name. Sears will pay another $30 million to acquire 13 of Eaton's suburban stores. The acquisitions will prevent US competitors such as Macy's or Bloomingdale's from starting operations in Canada. Sears also is now in a position to acquire Eaton's prime Montreal store.

Couche-Tard to get fee if a competing silcorp bid suceeds

Convenience store chain Silcorp Ltd. will be acquired by Laval, Quebec-based Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. for $220 million in cash and stock, or C$23 a share. The offer expires on Apr 9, 1999, at 7 p.m. Silcorp, which operates the Mike's, Mac's and Becker's stores, will pay Couche-Tard a breakup fee of C$8.9 million if it entertains and closes a deal with a higher, competing bid.
