Augmented reality systems impose information using a heads up video display, much as the military's infra-red headgear does. Researchers in North Carolina are developing video devices that help surgeons see ultrasound data overlayed on their view of what they are operating on. The Palo Alto researchers use heads up video display in reconstructive surgery. An mostly transparent image of the rebuilt bone is imposed on the damaged bone the surgeon is repairing.

In part due to a lawsuit brought against it by the National Federation for the Blind and other parties, Diebold Inc. has come up with a prototype for an inexpensive automated teller machine that runs entirely on audio prompts, making it accessible to blind customers. The voices will be generated by computer software that turns text into synthesized speech.
