September strike looms at Air Canada
Article Abstract:
Air Canada faces a strike by its pilots union as early as mid-September 1998 if both sides fail to reach an agreement. Until recently, the airline and the Air Canada Pilots Association have been negotiating to replace a labor contract that expired on April 1, 1998. The two parties are now asking to be released from the conciliation process after negotiations collapsed on Aug. 17, 1998. Major issues left unresolved include pay and working conditions, but a union official hinted that the union could perhaps accept a 10% hike a year in wages provided that the company improves working conditions and benefits.

Truckers driving a hard road
Article Abstract:
The trucking business in Canada is enjoying a resurgence, which unfortunately creates a lack of skilled and available drivers and a lack of new trucks and trailer equipment. The Canadian trucking business started to recover in June 1997 from a business decline that occurred since 1992. The business slowdown in Canada's trucking business was marked by the layoff of thousands of drivers, the closure of dozens of trucking firms and the consolidation of the trucking industry.
