Namakwa Diamond Company confirmed the beginning of regular mining of its Stage I project on South Africa's west coast with expectations of an annual pre-tax cashflows of $7mn. Namakwa has established a resource of 2.2 million tonnes of gravels of 18.7 carats/hundred tonnes containing 411,000 carats within an area covering less than 3% of its ground holding, over the last couple of years, which would be the basis for the Stage I project to produce 95,000 carats a year from 500,000 tonnes of gravels.

Namakwa Diamond's share price plummeted fourfold from a peak of 37.5 cents to 9.5 cents in the first week of July 2005. However, according to the early July 2005 report the company came good with news of a 135% lift in diamond trade and a more than doubling of production in the June quarter over March 2006.

Namakwa Diamond Company needs to raise between $3 m and $4 m for continuing exploration on its South African alluvial project. The same will be done through a quasi-equity offer such as a convertible note issue.
