Article Abstract:
An estimated 20 million Americans participated in a variety of activities on the Earth Day on April 22, 1970, an event conceived by Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson to shake up the political establishment and to force the issue of environmentalism on to the national agenda. The event exhibited a variety of activities throughout the country including marches, rallies, songfests, mock trials of polluters, trash pickup drives, and protests against polluting companies.

Questions are raised about the effectiveness of 'buying green' or purchasing environment-friendly, pollution-reducing products in helping the environment.
