Small business, handy tools
Article Abstract:
Small business operations can benefit from three software packages that require modest hardware configurations. Data Management Inc's $149.95 Timeclock Plus allows employees to 'punch in' on a microcomputer thereby streamlining paperwork and providing a method for analyzing labor costs. Timeclock Plus keeps up-to-the-minute totals of worktime, create work schedules, and list names and telephone numbers of available workers. It requires only 320Kbytes of system memory, a 360Kbyte floppy disk and can run on IBM PC-XTs or compatibles. Valusource's $195 Loan Express assists the user in creating a comprehensive business plan that is necessary when getting a loan. The program requires 640Kbytes of system memory and a hard disk. M-USA Business Systems Inc's $49.95 Cashbiz, a simple financial manager developed by Jose Hurtado, the programmer who wrote DAC Easy and Pacioli 2000 accounting software packages. Cashbiz prints invoices and simple business reports, maintain an accounts chart, track credit card balances and do other simple financial requirements of small businesses.

Newest Netware challenges customers
Article Abstract:
Novell Inc's NetWare 4.0 network operating system is able to extend the previous versions' ability to connect a maximum of 250 microcomputers to one file server to encompass multiple servers and thousands of users, each one connected to the other. An even more impressive feat is its ability to convert all microcomputer nodes into individual servers. NetWare 4.0 also offers a directory structure that assures ease-of-use and easier network administration. Other new features include data compression, which saves memory; safeguards that stop the failure of one application from bringing down the network; and point-and-click commands for adding and deleting users and functions. The safeguards slow down the software's performance, however. To ease the transition to NetWare 4.0, which could require weeks to learn, Novell is setting up special training courses and education centers for network managers.

Planetarium on a screen
Article Abstract:
Carina Software's $124.50 Voyager 1.1 allows Macintosh Plus, SE or II users to turn their machine into an animated sky chart. The menu offers three options: star atlas, local view, or celestial sphere. Star atlas has a continuous scroll and a zoom function for observing locations of stars, galaxies, planets or nebulas. Local view allows the user to see the night sky from any location on Earth at any given time. Voyager uses all the familiar Macintosh features, such as pull-down menus, radio buttons, scroll bars and icons. Particularly helpful program features include the ability to screen out selected celestial objects to avoid screen clutter and a tracking feature that gives an animated view of paths of designated planets, comets and asteroids. Voyager requires 1Mbyte of memory and comes on an 800K diskette.
