The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is launching an on-line media service for rural areas, the first of its kind in the world. The more than 50 Internet portals will also provide local news, threatening the business of country newspapers. The Country Press Association's executive director said country newspapers could compete with the ABC, since they had already survived competition from radio and television.
