Some heavy reading (accompanied by disks) for the Mac: from major programs to odds and ends
Article Abstract:
Several computer books that come packaged with software disks are recommended. Big Mac Secrets, by Mark Bilbo and Ken Maki (Que; $39.95), is a 1,249-page volume that covers buying, customizing and upgrading, as well as networking and troubleshooting. Software includes Masterjuggler and Diskflash, which are versions of commercial products. Masterjuggler manages fonts, sounds, and other resources and accessories. Diskflash oversees hard disk activities. Six other major programs and several smaller ones are included, all of which are shareware. Other books mentioned include The Dover Clip Art Library, Volume 1, by James Nadler (Bantam Books; $49.95), Yakety Mac: the Teklecom Tome, by Ross Scott Rubin (Hayden; $34.95), The Smiley Dictionary, by Seth Godwin (Peachpit Press; $6.95), Cool Mac Games Plus, by Cameron Crotty (Hayden; $24.95) and Macarcade, by Don Rittner (Ventana Press; $27.95).

Some offsprings of WordPerfect
Article Abstract:
WordPerfect, the word processing program, employs an interface that uses function keys, either alone or in combination with the shift, alt or control keys. These key assignments are not particularly logical and are hard to remember, so writers use WordPerfect with a cardboard template of commands pasted near the function keys. Companion ($99, plus $7 for shipping), from PsyBorne, transforms WordPerfect from a function key to a command-line word processor. Instead of using function keys, writers use easy-to-remember sequences of letters. Actually, users can arrange such an interface by using WordPerfect's own macro editor, but few people have the patience to do this. The version of Companion tested here is for MS-DOS computers running WordPerfect 5.0 or 5.1. MorePerfect 1.2 (shareware, registers for $30), from Simple Productions, is a similar but less ambitious program.
