A joint police and military action in Darwin's Robertson Barracks revealed the extent to which drugs had virtually taken over combat ready Australian soldiers posted there, but many observers also point out to the links between the soldiers and organized crime. Military observers say that the soldiers doing drugs is a reflection of the times they live in and they are only emulating what is happening in the civilian world.

A former platoon commander who served in South Vietnam is describing the relaxation methods carried out by the Australian soldiers during the wartime. The soldiers preferred alcohol to drugs, with a strong preference for beer after patrols, and consumption of American beer was encouraged because of its lower alcoholic content.
