The Australian Test team's downward trend in the Ashes tour was provoked by a confident England side that surprised their opponents with an aggressive style. The stumbling performance by the Australians was a rude wake-up call to the selectors who have to question whether they could have pre-empted the slide, and also need to decide which players they must retain to begin the rebuilding process.
