DVD sales energize home video market
Article Abstract:
The home video industry's otherwise flat sales for 1999 was boosted by the performance of the digital video disc (DVD) sector. DVD sales for 1999 were $1.5 billion, and are expected to surpass video home systems (VHS) sales by the year 2004. Sales of DVDs for 1999 were fueled to a large part by new DVD film sales, contrary to expectations of industry insiders that DVD sales would be confined to replacements of VHS titles with DVD-format movies.

Summer movies search for payoff of product tie-ins
Article Abstract:
The release by movie studios of their summer 2000 offerings is expected to be accompanied by aggressive merchandise campaigns and product tie-ins aimed at children and teenagers. However, analysts see the relative failure of merchandise sales for 'Episode I: The Phantom Menace' as a major obstacle that must be overcome. Among the movie releases set for this summer are Disney's 'Dinosaur,' Universal Studio's 'The Adventure of Rocky and Bullwinkle,' 'X-Men' and 'Pokemon the Movie 2000' from Warner Bros.
