Surge in imports spurs hopes for gains in productivity: Machinery demand fuels record gains

Increasing demand for machinery and equipment fuelled a record surge in Canadian imports in May 2004, sparking hopes that the long-awaited improvement in productivity would soon arrive. Imports of machinery and equipment climbed 13.9% during the month to $9.6-billion, the largest increase since September of 1981, offering some grounds for optimism that Canadian firms are investing technology that will increase their competitiveness and yield long-awaited economy-wide improvements.
