Taking on Form 1040 with 2 Mac programs
Article Abstract:
Softview Inc offers tax preparation software packages for both Macintosh and IBM-based microcomputers. Both MacInTax and MacInTax for Windows are available in a Federal version costing $99 and state versions costing $69. MacInTax for Windows is for use on IBM PC-compatible microcomputers running Microsoft Windows 3.0. The programs handle tax filing for the District of Columbia, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The MacInTax program represents a tax form on-screen, and the user enters information into the open fields. The computer makes calculations and links related forms. The forms are then sent to a laser or dot-matrix printer. High-resolution documents are accepted by the US Government. MacInTax for Windows emulates the Macintosh graphical user interface, but has flaws typical of a new product.

For type with a twist, programs make it easy
Article Abstract:
Special effects programs are available that distort or manipulate text, curving text, for an example. One such program, the $99.95 Type Align for ATM from Emerald City Software, works with Adobe Type Manager. Type Align is a desk accessory: Type Align is summoned while working in an application, typically a word processor, a desktop publisher or a graphics program. Type Align runs on Macintosh microcomputers with at least a megabyte of RAM and a hard disk or two 800Kbyte disk drives. The $199.95 Typestyler from Broderbund Software Inc, is more powerful, offering special effects that 'even graphic artists will find impressive.' This is a program for complex graphic designs; using Typestyler to dress up a letter would be overkill. Version 1.01 of Typestyler will use both Type One fonts and Type Three fonts, which should greatly enhance the program's appeal among graphic designers.
