Texas Instruments gets chip-case ruling
Article Abstract:
Analog Devices Inc, Cypress Semiconductor Corp, Integrated Device Technology Inc, LSI Logic Corp and VLSI Technology Inc have been ordered by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to cease use of Texas Instruments Inc's integrated circuit-packaging technology. The ITC ruled that the five companies infringed upon the Texas Instruments' technique of inserting fluid plastic under a microchip in its mold, called bottom gating. Each company has already implemented a different, top-gating process instead. Although this would seem to be a victory for Texas Instruments, which has also filed a patent infringement suit against these same companies in Dallas, TX, the five companies can still import the bottom-gated version of their chips. Texas Instruments, whose stock rose to 62.5 for $39.25 a share, earns more income from patent licenses than from manufacturing.

Texas Instruments offers advanced chips
Article Abstract:
Texas Instruments Inc plans delivery to large customers of its version of the world's most advanced memory chip. Analysts estimate that the worldwide sales of the 16M-bit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip will exceed $5 billion by 1994. The chip is the size of a fingernail and will find use in the computer and telecommunications industries. It will also be used in aircraft, automobiles and other products. Industry observers say that the introduction of the chip will re-instill American pride in the semiconductor industry. Texas Instruments decided to persevere in the early 1980s when many US companies gave up the market to foreign, especially Japanese, competitors.
