The $10 billion buyout
Article Abstract:
Congress agreed to spend $10.1 billion over the next ten years, after the 2005 season, to end the nation's tobacco quota and subsidy program, freeing growers to sell as much as they want in a free market or abandon tobacco farming altogether. The buyout allows the larger growers to expand their production and make a better living with tobacco and also provides the income needed to smaller growers to diversify or get out of the tobacco business altogether.

Article Abstract:
Patent medicines and foods associated with good health were popular in the late 1800s. Patent medicines claimed to cure or prevent every ailment imaginable, but they often contained risky amounts of opium extracts, cocaine, and grain alcohol, and hence the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906 forced the patent-medicine makers to disclose more information about ingredients and reduce excessive claims.
