The Joyless Recovery
Article Abstract:
The indications of an economic recovery for the US are not generating optimism in the business sector for expanded employment. Manufacturing industries are still trying to generate increased productivity from employees without hiring new workers. Rockford, IL's Rockford Powertrain and other local businesses are shifting work overseas to take advantage of cheaper labor in China and India. When companies move into the area, they usually provide a limited number of low-paying jobs. Area businesses are trying to reinvent themselves and find new specialty products and services, including development of air cargo services and low-cost airline facilities.

Economy Remained Strong In 4th Quarter, U.S. Reports
Article Abstract:
The fourth-quarter growth rate in 2003 reached 4%, but not the 5% rate that economists had predicted. Exports increased 19.1% and consumer spending hit 2.6% while business capital spending reached 10%. Economic forecasters are still concerned that the slow increase in new employment and the future inability to sustain high productivity with fewer employees could have a negative impact on future economic growth.
