The political-cum-economic challenge, involved in restoring the law and order in the Solomon Islands, is way beyond Australia's experience. According to Prime Minister John Howard, the Solomon Islands venture is just the opening scheme of a new era of increased Australian involvement and intervention in the region.

Australia has suffered a number of economic setbacks including the collapse of Ansett in 2001 which would have seen a government in an uncertain position unlikely to return to power in a federal election. John Howard's government has faced all this, but other issues appear to be dominating the election.
